Every year the Daytona Bike Week is held during spring time and this is considered by many to be the start of the motorcycle riding season, unofficially of course. It is an event that normally draws around 500,000 motorcycle enthusiasts while pumping some $300 million into the Daytona Beach economy. Before the 2009 Daytona Bike Week, the event organizers had concerns that the event would be affected negatively by the state of the economy. They were right, but only in terms of the attendance numbers themselves. During the event, many of the hotels had vacancy signs flashing despite the fact that they were usually full to capacity during other years. The 2009 Daytona Bike Week had all the usual motorcycle races at the International Speedway. On the other side of town, Harley Davidson was setting a new record for the total number of demo rides they provided. The unofficial number of rides per day was put at about 2,000. This totals a lot of rides when you think about the whole week.

Fortunately the usual party atmosphere was not affected during Daytona Bike Week 2009. Custom-made bikes rolling down the main drag, scantily clad women with big smiles, plenty of flowing alcohol, and great music. The week turned out to be just what promoters expected in terms of attendance, but at the same time the event still provided everything that annual attendees have come to expect.
